500 Years of Weggental Pilgrimage Church

The history of the pilgrimage to Weggental and the church there begins in 1517 with a small wooden Pietà: Mary, the sorrowful mother, holds her crucified son Jesus in her arms. This miraculous image is the origin of the pilgrimage that continues to lead to the Weggental church to this day. The Pietà still holds its place in the magnificent high altar, which was donated in 1730 as a gift from the Imperial House of Vienna.

Over the centuries, the pilgrimage became so well-known due to reports of healings and miracles attributed to the invocation of the Mother of Sorrows that, in the 18th century, thousands of Masses were celebrated annually in the Baroque pilgrimage church. The walls of the church were covered with votive tablets from grateful pilgrims.

However, the pilgrimage also experienced difficult times. There were phases in which it was forbidden and the Weggental church was even threatened with demolition.

Who leads the pilgrimage site?
