The Cross as a Sign of God's Love: The Meaning of Jesus' Death in Paul

Monday, November 9, 7 pm at Herbergsgasse 7 in Basel. Beni Mahnig is dealing with Paul's view of the events of the cross in his doctoral thesis and takes us on a journey through the Epistle to the Romans. Together we will explore the question of what the vicarious death of Jesus means and what relevance this interpretation of the cross can have for us today. The fact that this question is anything but obvious is shown by a famous judgment of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche on the death of Jesus on the cross: "The guilt offering, and moreover in its most repulsive, most barbaric form, the sacrifice of the innocent for the sins of the guilty! What gruesome paganism!" Even today, the meaning of Jesus' cross appears mysterious to many people. The evening invites us to engage anew with Paul's understanding of the cross and to discover its significance as a sign of God's love. Together with the VBG Basel (Christian University Association) and the Reformed Parish Office of both Basels at the university.
