The Cross as a Sign of God's Love: The Meaning of Jesus' Death in Paul
Monday, November 9, 7 p.m. at Herbergsgasse 7 in Basel In his doctoral thesis, Beni Mahnig examines Paul's view of the events of the cross and takes us on a journey through the Epistle to the Romans. Together, we will explore the question of what Jesus' vicarious death means and what relevance this interpretation of the cross can have for us today. That this question is anything but obvious is shown by a famous judgment of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche on the death of Jesus on the cross: "The guilt offering, and moreover in its most disgusting, most barbaric form, the sacrifice of the innocent for the sins of the guilty! What gruesome paganism!" Even today, the meaning of the cross of Jesus seems mysterious to many people. The evening invites us to engage anew with Paul's understanding of the cross and to discover its significance as a sign of God's love. Together with the VBG Basel (Christian University Association) and the Reformed Parish Office of both Basels at the university.
