Courses & Lectures

Auditorium

In the next auditorium event on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 8:00 PM, at the St. Marien parish hall, Prof. Dr. med. Georg Juckel will give a lecture on the topic: "Religious-spiritual approaches to the treatment of depression". Prof. Juckel is a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy and Medical Director of the LWL University Hospital Bochum. He researches the interface between psychiatry and spirituality. The announcement states: "In psychological crises, and especially in depression, fundamental themes of human existence come into focus: transience, finiteness, and the meaning of life. The Bible addresses various phenomena such as stress, burnout, bullying, loneliness, and other mental sufferings. It presents ways to deal with them. The healing methods of Jesus Christ closely resemble the principles of today's psychotherapy. Strengthening the power of faith plays a special role. Christian prayer as an inner dialogue with God is superior to modern mindfulness-based approaches to relaxation techniques: the attainment of peace of soul is based on the acceptance of the whole person by a higher being. In addition to study results on strengthening 'gratitude' and 'awe', initial findings of a study conducted in cooperation with the Stiepel monks will be presented: the effect of a liturgical evening devotion on depressed people." Following the lecture, we always invite you to a small reception. As with all lectures in the Auditorium Kloster Stiepel, there is a livestream on the monastery's YouTube channel.
